Hasidic Jewish Newspaper Photoshops Hillary Clinton from Situation Room Photo

By: Christy Choi (2 hours ago)

There's a lot of odd Photoshopping going on with the now-iconic photo of U.S. officials being updated on the bin Laden raid. But this one by Di Tzeitung, the ultra Orthodox Hasidic Jewish newspaper, might just take the prize.

Yep, those are big dark smudges where Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Counterterrorism Director Audrey Tomason should be. The officials were wiped from the picture in line with the newspaper's editorial policy of never publishing pictures of women, because they could be considered sexually suggestive.

(More on TIME.com: See home videos of Osama bin Laden)

The paper could potentially get in trouble, because the official photo was made available for reprinting under the condition that "the photograph may not be manipulated in any way." Here's the original, for those who have been living under a rock for the past week.

An endless war in Afghanistan is not in America's best interest.

This October will mark the 10-year anniversary of the start of Operation Enduring Freedom. I believe it's time to start bringing our troops home. It's time to put the future and security of Afghanistan in the hands of its own leaders, and focus America's national security on the emerging and more imminent threats from al Qaeda in other regions.

After nearly a decade at war, with still no equal commitment from the Karzai government, and after all the lives sacrificed and the billions we've spent on this war, it is my strong view that it is time to negotiate a Strategic Redeployment Agreement with Afghanistan that would mandate a date certain for the withdrawal of all United States combat forces.

This is why Senators Barbara Boxer, Sherrod Brown, Dick Durbin and I are co-sponsors of the Safe and Responsible Redeployment of United States Combat Forces from Afghanistan Act of 2011. The bill is simple and straight forward and I believe absolutely essential. So today, I'm asking you to stand with us as citizen co-sponsors.

Please add your name as a citizen co-sponsor and help demonstrate the vast support of Americans nationwide who believe it's time to bring our combat troops home and end the war in Afghanistan.

President Obama has already committed to begin the transfer of our forces out of Afghanistan this July and that is a vitally important step forward. However, this alone is not enough. I believe a clear combat redeployment agreement would help our efforts in Afghanistan by reinforcing Afghan sovereignty and protecting both the readiness and the flexibility we need to meet the full array of global security challenges that confront our country.

I have great confidence in the ability of our troops and the strategic focus of our commanders. We are not suggesting our government spell out every stage of U.S. troop redeployment -- specific decisions should be up to commanders on the ground and avoid giving the enemy a potential propaganda tool. Nor should we change the protection for our troops and flexibility for our mission that has been agreed upon in previous agreements.

However, it is critical we provide for a date certain for withdrawal of our combat forces, in order to give certainty to the American people; to ensure maximum flexibility in responding to other contingencies; and to publicly endorse the Afghan Government's assumption of lead responsibility as planned.

This is why we must pass the Safe and Responsible Redeployment of United States Combat Forces from Afghanistan Act now.

Please join me as a citizen co-sponsor today.

The time has come. Working together, we can end the war in Afghanistan.

Thank you for everything you do to move America forward.

Taking Apart the Right's History Lies

Wednesday was a big day for the Right Wing's favorite rewriter of American history, David Barton

Barton insists that the United States was founded as a Christian nation ... and that the Bible and Jesus's teachings directly oppose progressive taxation, the capital gains tax and collective bargaining rights for unions.

David Barton's influence on the Right has been steadily rising. Glenn Beck has called this faux historian "the most important man in America." He has the ear of several possible GOP presidential candidates and many members of Congress -- Michele Bachmann has even invited him to deliver a "history" lesson to her Tea Party caucus. And he has been instrumental in efforts to replace sound history with right-wing propaganda social studies textbooks and curricula in public schools across the country, most visibly in Texas last year.

On Wednesday, the New York Times published a high-profile article about Barton which linked to our report, Barton's Bunk. While our report exposes this charlatan for what he is, the Times report unfortunately focused too much on Barton's personal life and not enough on the insidious threat posed by his lies about American history, our Constitution and the Founders.

That same night, David Barton appeared as Jon Stewart's guest on The Daily Show. This was a follow up to Mike Huckabee's guest appearance when Stewart made Barton a big topic of the discussion. Stewart challenged Huckabee on previous statements he had made praising Barton. In fact, Huckabee's praise was so emphatic that at one speaking engagement, he said that he wished "all Americans would be forced -- forced at gunpoint no less -- to listen to every David Barton message." Huckabee's over-the-top endorsement is just one example of the importance with which the conservative movement treats Barton.

Even as deft an interviewer as Jon Stewart couldn't keep up with Barton's lies and distortions. The shear volume of the lies pouring out of Barton was incredible, as was the egregiousness of those lies.

Good thing our Right Wing Watch blog was there to fact check. Using our extensive past coverage of Barton on Right Wing Watch, as well as our Barton's Bunk report, we have been able to offer point-by-point refutations of distortions and falsehoods Barton so shamelessly peddled on The Daily Show.

Barton told Stewart that he "never had to retract a single thing" But we've provided a ong list of times when Barton has had to retract his statements and assertions, as well as times that he has been directly called out for misrepresenting quotes and lying about historical events and figures. That's just one example.

Obama Birth Certificate Released By White House (PHOTO)

It appears our President is beginning to assert himself (perhaps a bit too late, but we will see what happens after 2012). He told off quite a few reporters, as well as insinuating that the distraction tactics of the Tea Party and Republican Party have done nothing but damage the welfare or all but the corportations, when he released his long-form birth certificate:
"I know that there is going to be a segment of people for which no matter what we put out, this issue will not be put to rest," Obama said. "But I am speaking for the vast majority of the American people as well as for the press. We do not have time for this kind of silliness. We have better stuff to do. I have got better stuff to do. We have got big problems to solve."

"We are not going to be able to do it if we are distracted, we are not going to be able to do it if we spend time vilifying each other ... if we just make stuff up and pretend that facts are not facts, we are not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by side shows and carnival barkers," the president declared earlier.

Almost Total Recall

With all of the fervor for recall elections going on in Wisconsin, I was wondering why no one has galvanized the nation to have them recall some of the members of the House and Senate? The bills they are putting through are horrible, they have not made good on any campaign promises and do not intend to until they push through this horrible agenda, and the consequences of their actions will be felt for decades (not like they care). At this point, the middle class is becoming aware (allbeit more slowly than I would like) of the atrocities, and they do not like them.

What can be done to initiate recall elections on these members? If anything will send a message to the House to stop the war on women, that will be it.

The Scary Reality of a Real-Life Barbie Doll

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/galia-slayen/the-scary-reality-of-a-re_b_845239.html

By Galia Slayen

Some people have skeletons in their closet. I have an enormous Barbie in mine.

She stands about six feet tall with a 39" bust, 18" waist, and 33" hips. These are the supposed measurements of Barbie if she were a real person. I built her as a part of the first National Eating Disorder Awareness Week (NEDAW) at my high school, later introducing her to Hamilton College during its first NEDAW in 2011.

When I was a little girl, I played with my Barbie in her playhouse, sending her and Ken on dates that always ended with a goodnight kiss. I had fond times with my Barbie, and I admired her perfect blonde locks and slim figure. Barbie represented beauty, perfection and the ideal for young girls around the world. At least, as a seven-year-old, that is what she was to me.

In January 2007, I was looking for a way to make my peers realize the importance of eating disorders and body image issues. I was frustrated after quitting the cheerleading squad, frustrated with pressures to look and act a certain way and most of all frustrated with the eating disorder controlling my life. I wanted to do something that would turn others' apathy into action. That evening, my neighbor and I found two long pieces of wood and started measuring. With a little math, nails and hammering, we built a stick figure that stood about six feet tall.

The chicken wire came next. Surrounding her wooden frame, we created a body that wasn't much thicker than a stick figure, but had the womanly and unattainable curves and proportions that impressionable young girls idealize. We stuffed the chicken wire with newspaper and created a body that creepily leaned against the wall in my neighbor's basement. She now needed some skin, so I brought her back to my apartment and employed the masterful art of papier maché.

Taking stacks of newspaper, glue and water, I skipped my high school semi-formal dance to give my girl some skin. Oddly, I started to feel my fondness for Barbie return, now not as a plaything but as a tool to reveal the negative body image that she promotes. As I papier machéd, I couldn't forget Barbie's impressive bust and blew up balloons over and over again to achieve a perfect 39" measurement. Once her chest was secured, I spent hours dipping and smoothing the paper, and later mixed paints to replicate her seemingly perfect white skin tone. With a little hard work and a lot of time, a headless, footless and handless body soon stood in my apartment.

But it was then I became stumped. I couldn't figure out how to recreate the recognizable face of the Barbie we all know and love. With NEDAW just around the corner, I was panicked. On my way to get office supplies, I drove by a Toys 'R' Us, and that's when it hit me. Remember that Barbie with just shoulders and a head, meant for you to practice brushing her hair? I confidently walked into the toy store for the first time since I was a kid. I found the Barbie head, found a friend to assemble that head, and clothed Barbie for her first debut.

I dressed Barbie in my old clothes. The skirt she still has on today is a reminder of who I once was. That skirt, a size double zero, used to slip off my waist when I was struggling with anorexia. I put it on Barbie to serve as a reminder that the way Barbie looks, the way I once looked, is not healthy and is not "normal," whatever normal might mean. My Barbie's role is simple. She grabs the attention of apathetic onlookers and makes them think and talk about an issue that thrives in silence. In the last four years, Barbie has surpassed my expectations, attracting attention and sparking conversation among listeners and readers across the nation.

Once a year, at the end of February, Barbie comes out of the closet to meet my friends, strangers, and those apathetic onlookers. During NEDAW, she reminds people that eating disorders and body image issues are serious and prevalent. Holding an awareness week in high school or college is just one way to get students to discuss these important issues. However, constant discussion and education is key to dealing with and overcoming eating disorders.

Despite her bizarre appearance, Barbie provides something that many advocacy efforts lack. She reminds of something we once loved, while showing us the absurdity of our obsession with perfection.
